This 1766 travel classic showcases Smollett’s curiosity and flair for satire. Across France to Nice (including a stay at Cannes), and on to Genoa, Rome, and Florence, the novelist misses nothing of the natural world, nor does he spare the natives or his traveling companions in his often acerbic comments on their manners and morals.

Tobias George Smollett (1721-1771) was a Scottish author and poet whose picaresque novels, such as Roderick Random and Peregrine Pickle, influenced many later authors, including Charles Dickens. Educated in medicine at the University of Glasgow, Smollett earned a commission as a surgeon aboard the HMS Chichester. He settled in Downing Street to devote himself to writing.
